Holding the Earth in the Palm of your Hand
The photos I showed of Hudson Yards in my previous blog post show aspects of this great location.
Another viewpoint can be had by using Google Earth. It is like holding the entire world in the palm of your hand. The ability to rotate, zoom and manipulate the 3D rendering of the buildings is rather ‘mind-blowing’.
Here is a link to Google Earth with a search for the Vessel at Hudson Yards.
Here is a screen shot of the site once the image stops rotating.

Here are two screenshots from my iPad of the Hudson Yards.

Please try your ‘hand’ at rotating and zooming within Google Earth. You might want to visit some places you have been to, to ‘see’ them in a new light. The 3D rendering of buildings in New York City is phenomenal.
Uses for Google Earth in your Photographic Workflow
Although I used Google Earth as an afterthought, one might consider using it before going on a photoshoot, so as to plan your shots and itinerary. I attended a Photojournalism Workshop a while ago and the instructor said to research your subjects before embarking on the shoot. Wise words indeed.
We are blessed with modern technology in our cameras: autofocus, in-camera image stabilization, HDR photography, and the like. Why not add Google Earth to our toolkit?
